Muyil ruins & Sian Ka'an floating canals
A quiet Maya city inside the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, then the lagoons and canals of Muyil.
Muyil lies about 25 km south-west of Tulum, inside the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. INAH describes it as an important coastal city that was inhabited from the Late Preclassic until the Late Postclassic and had contact with Chichén Itzá and Mayapán. Its original name is unknown; Muyil is the colonial name of one of the lagoons beside it.
Sian Ka'an became a biosphere reserve in 1986 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. CONANP lists the Muyil canals among the reserve's visitor sites, and the reserve is home to jaguar, tapir, manatee and the jabiru stork.
