Cobá & Punta Laguna spider monkeys

About 9 hours English guideSpanish guide Private tour Hotel pickup in Riviera Maya & Tulum

The lakeside Maya city of Cobá and its white roads, then spider monkeys in the forest reserve of Punta Laguna.

Cobá grew up beside five lakes and was one of the most important cities of the northern Maya lowlands. INAH counts more than 50 raised white roads (sacbeob) there; the longest runs about 100 km to Yaxuná. Nohoch Mul, the tallest building at Cobá, rises in seven tiers with rounded corners.

About 18 km north lies Otoch Ma'ax Yetel Kooh, "the house of the monkey and the puma", a federal flora and fauna protection area since 2002. Its forest is home to a population of spider monkeys, as well as black howler monkeys, pumas and ocelots.

Good to know

Will we definitely see monkeys?

They are wild animals, so sightings cannot be guaranteed. The reserve is one of the region's most important spider-monkey refuges.

Are there rules in the monkey reserve?

CONANP asks visitors not to bring plastics, pets or drones, not to feed the wildlife, and to use authorised service providers.

When is Cobá open?

INAH lists Cobá as open Monday to Sunday, 08:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:00 (checked September 2026). We confirm hours when we reply to your request.
